Bending failure of an over reinforced concrete beam

FACT FILE

  • Material
    Reinforced concrete
  • Dimensions
    63mm x 130mm
  • Design Criteria
    Designed for brittle failure

This video demonstrates a four-point bending test on an over-reinforced concrete beam.

Learning Outcomes:

Viewers will gain an improved understanding of:

  • Brittle failure in reinforced concrete.
  • How the quantity of reinforcement in a beam can affect the failure mode.

The beam demonstrates brittle behaviour as it is loaded to failure. The video demonstrates how providing too much steel reinforcement in the tension zone of a beam will cause it to fail in a sudden brittle manner as the concrete fails in compression.
