Catastrophe in use – supporting students at the Energy Engineering Summer School

This just in from Lawrence Coates at University of East Anglia. Thanks Lawrence for sharing news of Workshed in use.
“As part of the first Energy Engineering Summer School at UEA 21 year 12 pupils from schools around the UK took part in a challenge to build a lattice tower structure.  Jason Martin from East Anglian Windfarm joint venture explained the challenges of founding the large wind turbines to be built in Round 3.  Attendees were then challenged to build a 900mm tall tower that could carry a vertical load of 20N.  Lateral loads equivalent to the thrust from the wind turbines were then applied with a minimum of 10N and a failure load of 40N.  Workshed Catastrophe was used to illustrate behaviour of lattice structures to help the pupils understand which members would be in compression and susceptible to buckling.”
