For me, a sketch is all about communication. It doesn’t have to be a work of art, quite the contrary as it is often the simplest, quickest sketches that are the most effective. It’s about communication, explanation and understanding. That is where the sketch comes into its own – explaining something in a few lines that would take several minutes to explain verbally.

They also don’t have to be a ‘one-way’ tool – often some of my sketches have been drawn over so many times that they are no longer visible. However, that process of evolving the idea, tweaking elements of it and gradually refining it often leads to the best result…even if you have to redraw it at the end!
